"He’s essentially obsessed with Patsey." — Michael Fassbender on his character Edwin Epps
"Patsey is a young slave girl on Master Epps plantation. She is the object of the master’s affection and cruelty. He’s madly in love with her and he takes it out on her violently." — Lupita Nyong’o on her character
"Lupita [Nyong’o] is a complete newcomer. Straight out of drama school and so bright and so poised and prepped. Is really impressive." — Michael Fassbender
"It was a dream come true to get to work with Michael [Fassbender] on my first film. What gets captured on camera is what it’s actually happening in the scene, so he’s terrifying but he’s also really a gentle person in real life, which made it safe to do the things I had to do with him." — Lupita Nyong’o
I WOULD NOT CALL THIS “LOVE”
I agree with Fassbender though. Epps was obsessed with Patsy. I also think in Epps’s mind, he does love Patsy. However as I recall Fassbender’s answer at TIFF this in no way excuses nor make feel bad for Epps, you ain’t suppose to but he doesn’t need to provide an excuse or reason for Epps either.
Girl bye he raped her if that’s love I don’t want to see what hate is.
Of course he raped her. I didn’t say he didn’t. It still don’t change the fact Epps is obsessed with Patsy and in his fucked up head he “loves” her, I don’t agree with that but he wouldn’t be the first fucked up person to confuse obsession/possession with love. That is why Mistress Epps hates Patsy. I hated Epps the entire time cause again you ain’t suppose like him nor find what the fuck he did romantic or even loving. Obsession does not equate love.
People need to remember an important line spoken by the indentured white servant where he says the people to dole out these cruelties have to make up irrational reasons in their mind or be trampled by it.
